Planking… New phenomenon or not?

I seeing that many people are well taken to the new “it thing” called Planking. Oh wow, you are able to lay across an object straight without falling.
Great now here’s your trophy.
It’s not something new and to me personally it’s not funny but I can see where people would say otherwise and I don’t object. At first I believed that planking was first introduced during the slavery era where it was the way of stowing many African Americans were forced to lay down on top of each other’s upon the planks of a slave ship's lower hold but it’s actually not.
It was first introduced back in Australia where people would just play dead. If you really think about, it’s done in our everyday lives. Just think about it.
All you have to do is to put your body face down to the ground (or any object) with your arms to the side. Yeah, that it. Don’t we do so when we are lying down in our own bed sometimes? But the phenomenon of it all is planking just about anywhere where it would be dangerous, a place you can get seriously hurt. But it’s definitely huge, I can definitely say. Every time I go through my facebook page there is someone planking for the fun of it. I’m guessing there is nothing better to do during the summer this year.
Though it still brings back the history of slavery where so many where chained down on the planks of ships. Yes, it is fun and enjoyable to watch to some but it is an insult to many.  The term was not used during that era, I truly don’t have the answer to the term that was used but I put in respect to those who do see it as an insult.
I wonder what’s next?
